I sat today for morning 9am class, eagerly waiting for our Business Communication professor, T Prasad sir, to our surprise Prasad sir has arranged a guest lecture by one of our NITIE alumni, Mr. Nikhil Kulkarni.
Mr. Nikhil completed his studies from NITIE and worked with KPMG as consultant before opting out for his dream venture of starting his own firm. He later founded Darwin Tech a travel technology B2B startup for leisure holiday market and is planning to expand it to B2C as well.
He started with insights and importance of Business Communication.
• Consulting, which is most sought after carrier, and which happens to be Nikhil’s forte, he emphasised on importance of Business Communication in consulting. He mentioned that in Consulting, 80% is Business Communication, 15% is Relationship Management and 5% is research.
• Giving importance to widely used tools , that is, Excel, word and Powerpoint which will be our best buddies in the journey. We have to work smartly and so knowing the right ways only will help out in the long run and save your time.
• He introduced us to the concept of "The Pyramid Principle" which involves 4 concepts- Situation, Complication, Question and Solution.
Situation-Who is the audience? What do audience know? and the last one What is the frame of reference?
Complication-What is the concern area that has been identified as a system?
Question-What is the underlying question that has been answered or the problem being solved?
Solution-What is the answer or the solution that has been suggested?
• He also mentioned about MECE (Mutually Exclusive Collectively Exhaustive) concept. Collectively Exhaustive means everything has to be covered and mutually exclusive means there should be no repetition of content, which helps in impactful delivery to the recipient.
• He especially emphasized the importance of infographics in any presentation. Pictures speak louder than words and are more impactful.
Personal Branding-
Importance of personal branding is we all are aware of. In this one will do not have to make CV atleast.
Everyone can build his personal brand, and stand out of the crowd! Below are the drivers to be one-
1. Have a focus.
2. Be genuine.
3. Tell a story through your actions.
4. Be consistent.
5. Be ready to fail and learn.
6. Create a positive impact.
7. Leave a legacy and Lead by example.
However, this blog is ending, but scope of Business communication is endless. I will try to bring in more dimensions.
Keep reading! Stay tuned.
